Flats and low heels you can wear all day: slingbacks, ballet flats and mules

High heels have their moments, but most days call for something you can walk a city block in without thinking about it. These three styles look as polished as a stiletto and are far kinder to your feet. They also happen to be the shoes people are saving most this year.

The slingback

A pointed toe, a strap around the heel and a low kitten or block heel: the slingback is the most elegant low shoe there is. It lengthens the leg like a pump does, without the height. Black patent and nude leather are the most useful colors; a two-tone toe cap is a classic.

The office formulaBlack wide-leg trousers, a tweed or houndstooth blazer and black slingbacks with a low heel.
The evening formulaA satin slip skirt, a fine black knit and metallic slingbacks.

The ballet flat

The ballet flat is back, and this time it comes in color as often as black. A soft leather or suede flat with a slightly pointed or almond toe looks grown-up; a round toe looks younger and more casual. Mustard, red and cream are easy ways to add color to a neutral outfit.

What to look for

A leather lining and a padded insole make the difference between a flat you wear once and one you wear every week. Ask a cobbler to add a thin rubber sole protector before the first wear.

The mule

Backless and easy to slip on, the mule works for warm days, holidays and evenings out. A square toe and a sturdy block heel are the most comfortable combination and the most current. Tan leather goes with almost everything in a summer wardrobe.

The weekend formulaA linen shirt, wide cream trousers, a straw or leather bucket bag and tan block-heel mules.

Fit matters more than height

A comfortable shoe is one that fits, whatever the heel. Shop in the afternoon, when your feet are at their largest. Check that your heel does not slip in a slingback and that your toes do not curl in a mule. Leather will stretch a little; synthetic materials will not.
